Now, what they are basically doing is, when they do a bankruptcy, is they\u2019re filing something called an assignment, and in so doing, they\u2019re applying for a discharge from their debts.  The whole purpose of a bankruptcy is to ultimately be released from your debts.  There\u2019s a process that usually takes 9 months, (in some cases it might go a little longer than that) but the basic idea is: you go to a trustee, the trustee explains all your options to you, and you \u201cdeclare bankruptcy\u201d by signing a bunch of papers and actually making the decision to do exactly that.
